The Essence of Wildness and MajestyEast Africa is home to some of the largest mammal migrations on Earth. Each year, millions of animals, including zebras and wildebeests, travel hundreds of miles in search of food and water during seasonal migrations through the grasslands and savannas of Kenya and Tanzania. The region is also home to 40 million people, including the semi-nomadic Maasai, who depend on its fertile lands and healthy rivers for their livelihoods, food and drinking water. But increased demand for land stemming from population growth is fragmenting the last remaining migratory routes for wildlife, while increased competition for resources is forcing people like the Maasai away from traditional livelihoods. With your support of the Adopt an Acre program in East Africa, you are helping preserve landscapes that are sufficiently large and intact to sustain large mammal migrations and rare species. Saving these last great migratory routes will mean protecting millions of animals.
Over the next two years, The Nature Conservancy will work to conserve more than 2 million acres of public, private and communal lands. To accomplish this goal, we are:
With your help, we will ensure that rangelands and waters are sustainably managed, and we will work to reduce illegal poaching in and around protected areas. When you give today to the Adopt an Acre® program, you are helping save one of the world’s last great migrations and cultivating hope and opportunity for the people who live in these dynamic landscapes. |
