Frequently Asked Questions

What is Adopt an Acre®?

Adopt an Acre® is a Nature Conservancy program that began in 1991 to protect the world’s most important and imperiled natural places. You may adopt an acre at $50 an acre in the following locations:

In addition, for $50, you may plant 50 trees in Brazil's Atlantic Forest through our Plant a Billion Trees Campaign.

What is Adopt a Coral Reef?

Adopt a Coral Reef is a Nature Conservacy program that protects coral reefs in The Bahamas,Palau, Dominican Republic and Papua New Guinea. You can learn more about all the Adopt a Coral Reef projects at nature.org/coralreefs.

How is my donation used when I adopt an acre or a coral reef?

When you give to Adopt an Acre® or Adopt a Coral Reef, our scientists and field staff identify key conservation strategies to ensure the lasting protection of your acre. Some of these strategies include:

  • Acquiring land
  • Planting trees and restoring native vegetation
  • Conducting scientific field research to identify and protect key fish breeding sites
  • Hiring and training park guards and staff to protect against illegal logging and poaching
  • Working with private landowners to establish permanent conservation easements
  • Helping to enforce environmental regulations and combat illegal fishing activities

For symbolic adoptions, your donation will be used to support Conservancy programs in the state or country that you designated. If you did not choose a location, your donation will be used to support established Adopt an Acre programs as well as other important Conservancy work. All other Adopt an Acre and Adopt a Coral Reef donations will benefit the specific program you selected, with up to 10 percent of your honorary gift may be applied by the Conservancy as unrestricted to cover any costs, such as direct and indirect costs to implement, administer and market the Adopt an Acre® or Adopt a Coral Reef programs.

How does a Where You Want to Help Most: Symbolic Adoption differ from donating to one of the locations listed above?

We have expanded the Adopt an Acre program to allow you to symbolically adopt lands and waters in the areas that mean the most to you. You can now designate the state or country to benefit from your donation — supporting the conservation work that is relevant to you.

Who owns the land purchased through the Adopt an Acre® program?

Your adoption of an acre is symbolic and does not denote ownership. The Conservancy works with a network of local partners and believes that in most cases land is best managed when it remains in local hands. In some cases, the land acquired through Adopt an Acre is incorporated into already established parks and protected areas.

How much does it cost to adopt one acre?

It costs $50 per acre. You may also adopt half an acre for $25.

What do I get when I adopt?

When you adopt one or more acres in established Adopt an Acre sites, you will receive the following adoption packet:

  • Personalized certificate commemorating your generosity
  • Fact sheet
  • Colorful magnet collection
  • Four issues of Nature Conservancy magazine (plus, we’ll rush the latest issue of the magazine to you or your gift recipient)
  • An invitation to create a personalized nature homepage on nature.org
