Bringing a Forest Back to Life

Centuries ago, the once-mighty Atlantic Forest covered nearly 330 million acres, an area roughly the size of the eastern seaboard of the United States. Today only 7 percent remains. The Conservancy has launched an ambitious effort to plant 1 billion trees and bring this natural treasure back from the brink.

The Atlantic Forest is among the most biologically diverse forests in the world and harbors a high number of species that are found nowhere else on Earth. The Nature Conservancy is reforesting degraded lands and reconnecting tracts of native forest through an ambitious campaign to plant one billion native trees.

The pink coloring of the Roseate spoonbill often leads people to confuse it with the flamingo. This beautiful bird can be found wading in the coastal waters of South America (including Brazil's Atlantic Forest), the Caribbean and in the United States along the Gulf Coast.
